چکیده
We show for the first time that only one similarity solution describes break-up of viscous liquid threads is linearly stable, while other solutions are unstable. Complex eigenvalues lead to presence oscillations close break-up.

Shape and stability of a viscous thread.
When a viscous fluid, like oil or syrup, streams from a small orifice and falls freely under gravity, it forms a long slender thread, which can be maintained in a stable, stationary state with lengths up to several meters. We discuss the shape of such liquid threads and their surprising stability. The stationary shapes are discussed within the long-wavelength approximation and compared to exper...
متن کاملSimilarity Solutions for Capillary Pinch-Off in Fluids of Differing Viscosity
Self-similar profiles associated with capillary instability of a fluid thread of viscosity lh in surrounding fluid of viscosity h are obtained for 1 16 # l # 16 via a simplified numerical scheme. Universal similarity scaling is preserved despite an asymptotically large velocity in the pinching neck driven by nonlocal dynamics. The numerical results agree well with experimental measurements by C...

The interface location and the time evolution of the free surface boundary condition are both approximated by means of level set techniques on a fixed...
متن کاملAutocatalytic plume pinch-off.
A localized source of buoyancy flux in a nonreactive fluid medium creates a plume. The flux can be provided by either heat, a compositional difference between the fluid comprising the plume and its surroundings, or a combination of both. For autocatalytic plumes produced by the iodate-arsenous acid reaction, however, buoyancy is produced along the entire reacting interface between the plume and...
متن کاملGiant bubble pinch-off.
Self-similarity has been the paradigmatic picture for the pinch-off of a drop. Here we will show through high-speed imaging and boundary integral simulations that the inverse problem, the pinch-off of an air bubble in water, is not self-similar in a strict sense: A disk is quickly pulled through a water surface, leading to a giant, cylindrical void which after collapse creates an upward and a d...
